Summary

Welcome to the Cornish Family Coast to Coast Challenge – an 180 miles cross country walk that will take us from St Bees, Cumbria to Robin Hood's Bay, North Yorkshire. Mum, Dad, 5 kids (age 4 - 12 yrs old) and a grandad (72 and counting) will 'walk a mile in the shoes' of families who have been displaced through war, famine, fear or persecution. Over 16 days (come rain, shine or blisters), we will peak mountains, traverse valleys and hike through moor and woods. We’ll be raising money for refugee families who, unlike us, had no choice but to leave their homes – families just like ours and yours.

Our chosen charity, Refugee Action York (RAY), offer practical aid, emotional support and an open door to men, woman, children and families without discrimination. Hear their stories and follow our intrepid journey either online or by our side. In true British style, let us stand (or walk) together in welcoming our newest countrymen to England’s green and pleasant land.

DAY SIX - Burnbanks to Orton (13miles) Wednesday 9 August 2017

What should have been a simple(simpler) day turned into quite a hard trek as tired legs, sore feet and too many late nights begun to add one on top of the other.  We really need to get out earlier.  All the other hikers are half way through their day by the time we are starting and it is turning into a bit of a lonely journey.  As lonely as one can be with five noisy kids in tow.

Some way into our hike we came across an honesty box.  Lovely Thomas Richardson has placed a chest full of goodies to ameliorate sugar starved travellers on a 'I Trust You'll Do The Right Thing' basis.  We would have loved to join in with the spirit of the offer but had no cash with us and, well, I guess we are honest.  Still, it was worth the lovely conversations we got to have with the children after finding it.

This beautiful monument (Shap Abbey) marks the end of the Lake District and a new leg of our journey into the Yorkshire Dales.  The scenery sure looks different.

I think a fellow traveller who went before us thought the same.  For their 'hobo markings' seemed quite clear.

With one mile to go, that only means one thing for our family.  Giant lollipop time!!!  (If consumed carefully this product may last the whole last mile of a hike.  Each lolly may have a variation of sucking time.  Terms and conditions apply.)

'The refugee camps are often filled with families stuck in limbo, as they have a hard time seeking asylum in a European country. F says, “I was split up from my 12-year-old son as we were boarding the boats that the traffickers were taking us on. Luckily, he managed to make it to Germany with his uncles, but although I am with my wife and other two children, we are stuck.”'
