Summary

Welcome to the Cornish Family Coast to Coast Challenge – an 180 miles cross country walk that will take us from St Bees, Cumbria to Robin Hood's Bay, North Yorkshire. Mum, Dad, 5 kids (age 4 - 12 yrs old) and a grandad (72 and counting) will 'walk a mile in the shoes' of families who have been displaced through war, famine, fear or persecution. Over 16 days (come rain, shine or blisters), we will peak mountains, traverse valleys and hike through moor and woods. We’ll be raising money for refugee families who, unlike us, had no choice but to leave their homes – families just like ours and yours.

Our chosen charity, Refugee Action York (RAY), offer practical aid, emotional support and an open door to men, woman, children and families without discrimination. Hear their stories and follow our intrepid journey either online or by our side. In true British style, let us stand (or walk) together in welcoming our newest countrymen to England’s green and pleasant land.

DAY ONE - St Bees to Whitehaven (5.5 miles) Friday 4 August 2017

The challenge has begun.

After joining the ranks of those who have trekked before us to collect our pebble for carrying across country with us and dipping our shoes in the sea we have begun our adventure with a whole lot of hope and feet yet unflustered by the road to come.

But most of all, our hearts are full of why we are doing this mad cap adventure in the first place.  RAY.  Refugees Action York.  To support the amazing women and men in the work to help refugees as they find their feet their lives and their homes in a new land.  Our land.  All of us together.  For 16 days our family will be displaced, homeless, tired, disconnected and driven for the end of our journey.  But we know where that will be.  We know we have a choice to give up.  We have no fear, hunger or pain tracking our every move.  We could never compare ourselves to what a true refugee goes through each and every day.  But we can walk, maybe, a mile in their shoes.  Experience, just a little.  Share, in a single difficult moment.  And raise enough money to make a BIG difference if you join with us too.

'Refugees from war zones and chaos are not a new phenomenon. The wide-eyed shock of children as captured by photojournalists is documented whenever a country or city is ravaged by war. It’s easier to turn away; it’s harder to look. But by being aware and doing something – anything – to offer help can soften the heart-wrenching blow suffered by children, men, women, families, when they have to tear themselves away from the world they know and love.'
