Summary

Welcome to the Cornish Family Coast to Coast Challenge – an 180 miles cross country walk that will take us from St Bees, Cumbria to Robin Hood's Bay, North Yorkshire. Mum, Dad, 5 kids (age 4 - 12 yrs old) and a grandad (72 and counting) will 'walk a mile in the shoes' of families who have been displaced through war, famine, fear or persecution. Over 16 days (come rain, shine or blisters), we will peak mountains, traverse valleys and hike through moor and woods. We’ll be raising money for refugee families who, unlike us, had no choice but to leave their homes – families just like ours and yours.

Our chosen charity, Refugee Action York (RAY), offer practical aid, emotional support and an open door to men, woman, children and families without discrimination. Hear their stories and follow our intrepid journey either online or by our side. In true British style, let us stand (or walk) together in welcoming our newest countrymen to England’s green and pleasant land.

Adder walk revisited - Monday 31st July 2017

Being so close to our main event, we thought it would be nice to re-walk somewhere we could comfortable compare our progress and boost our confidence in how far we have progressed.

Big mistake!

Everything felt harder!  It has been so busy this month that practising has been squashed in around end of term must attend events, last minute admin for the trip and trying to live a normal life that was not all about how many mph did we reach and what calories were burnt.  So, although we have walked and walked and walked, they were not hard enough.  Especially the urban tactic.  What we needed were hills and more hills.  Especially as we recently found out that if we add each incline of the walk together it is the equivalent of hiking up Mount Everest.  Not bad for a summer jaunt.  For now, though, the hills seems unsurpassable.  OUCH!

Tomorrow we are going to tackle just that. 😓😓😓.  Yes, it really deserves a triple sad sweaty face emoji.  They will match mum's real face tomorrow.

Still, the good news is that after the terrible tragedy of our foraging hike, we managed to find a look-likey actress to play the part of 'Lizzie' for the rest of our trip.  And we must admit we have grown terribly fond of her already.

Howardian Hills (Yummiest walk ever) - Thursday 27th July 2017

Today our hike turned out to be a foraging dream.  Dad is always willing to go the extra mile to put food in his children's mouths. --->
First stop CHERRIES.

<------Then some lovely potatoes.  Chips or jackets?

<----The hazel nuts might not have been quite ready but the raspberries were delicious.---->

Not to seem too greedy, we decided to share our bounty with the locals.  Although some of them became a little too friendly.

<---Next course we were onto wheat followed by palate cleansing sloes.  Meaning, we spat them out.  Ugh!---->

Then...the crops decided to fight back.  I guess we weren't the only hungry and curious creatures in the wilds of North Yorkshire.

A moments silence for Lizzie, please.  She will be sorely missed.

First day of the Summer holidays and...RAIN!  What else for the Cornish family to do but WALK.

Looking for good tracks in the rain does not always bring the best scenery.  We chose the Dalby Forest route to try and keep our feet as dry as possible (did not work out as good as planned though).

Long straight paths, not a soul to be found, endless drizzle, tree lined views and cow poop galore.  If only we could find something interesting to liven this hike up...

WILD RASPBERRIES!!!  YUMMY!!!

Watch out below!  There is something sharing the pathway with us.

Another new record broken today.  Esme (age 4) made 8.9 miles without one complaint or a sneaky carry on dad's shoulders.  A very proud moment for her and a great relief to the rest of us.  Maybe we can do this challenge after all!

Don't forget to sign up on our site if you wish to join us for a day.

Dib Dib Dib, Let's get prepared! #1 Equipment check

After a few weeks of urban walks that have left us feeling a little disconnected with our ambitions, we decided to jump back into our adventure with some good old team work.

Off to a pretty good start.

         Within 10 mins...!

I think we are ready for this camping malarky.

Oops, somehow the pictures were uploaded in reverse order.  Still, taking it down is half the battle.

White Horse 12 Miles - Saturday 1st July

When we started our journey our first hike was recorded at about 2.2 mph.  We set a goal to achieve 2.5 mph, but after a few weeks wandered if it would ever be possible.  Today we checked in with a whopping 2.9 mph over a 12 mile course.  Hills and a 4yr old.  Totally proud of our kids!!!

<-- Last time we walked this
way the field looked like this.

And now... -->

CALL 999 - Which service?  milk maid emergency!

Not forgetting the wild animal alert!

If you are going to be joining us for a day...start practising.  If you can't keep up with Esme you get left behind!  (See 'Join Us' link)

We did it!

THANK YOU!  Thank you to everyone who has supported our efforts with donations, encouragement and even walking alongside us. We have ...
